Extra Credit- Quarter 2 - December 2009

Create a Glogster/Prezzi about a famous Spanish speaking person.
The GLOG/Prezzi must have:
- 10 sentences in Spanish about the person.
- 1 paragraph (in English) with 8-10 sentences explaining why you chose this person.
- picture of the person
- Bio information including prizes this person might have received.
- a video of an interview or performance.

If I get two of the same texts in Spanish, neither one will receive credit, also, I reserve the right to ask the student what do the sentences mean. If the sentences make no sense (because of the use of translators) the student will get no credit either.
This is due Friday, December 18th, 2009. Please e-mail me the glog or the prezi presentation so that I know you have completed this activity.

Here are some names you might consider using:
Alexis Bledel
Selena Gomez
James Roday
Mercedes Sosa
Ricardo Montalban
Enrique Murciano
América Ferrera
Jennifer Lopez
Salma Hayek
Antonio Banderas
Penélope Cruz
Benicio del Toro
Pedro Almódovar

El Día de los Muertos

Our next big project is a poster to represent altars for the Day of the Dead. The students will work on creating posters online that will honor a famous Spanish speaking person who has already passed away. Check back later in the month to check out what they make. Here are some pictures of altars from the Day of the Dead celebration in some hispanic countries.

Copy and paste the following link to see some more altars and the meanings of each item...

Sharing with Kindergarten

Spanish 3 class prepared some traditional drinks from Costa Rica and Chile and shared with Mrs. Dicks's Kindergarten class. One was called Batido Tropical and the other Chocolate con leche. The kids seemed to enjoy it. Check out their blog to see a picture... Here are the recipes...

1 tbsp sugar
2 tbsp unsweetened chocolate, in pieces or chocolate chips
1 piece of orange or lime peel (grated)

IWLA Conference

This was the first time I attended this conference. It was a great experience and I was able to get lots of good ideas for my classroom. Now, all I need is time to check out all of the great sites and ideas that were shared. I met teachers from all over the world and it was a great place for networking. I feel even more excited to go back to the classroom and try out the new ideas.
I will post the new activities as we try them...

Alfajores

The students of Spanish 4 enjoyed "alfajores" in class. This is a traditional cookie from Uruguay... A lot of the students asked for the recipe, so here it is...

6.5 oz butter
8 oz sugar
6 yolks
1 lime (grate the skin)
13 oz flour
7 oz corn starch
2 tsps yeast

Filling: "dulce de leche"

Shredded coconut for decoration.

Mix the ingredients, spread and cut the cookies in small circles. Spread oil in a cookie sheet and put the cookies on it. Put it in the oven until they are golden brown. (350 degrees)

Put the filling between 2 cookies when they are cold. Roll the cookie on the coconut.
Enjoy!

¡Hola!

Bueno, aquí vamos en una nueva era de tecnología. I am very excited to get things going with the Spanish classes. Because of the great resources available out there, I have been able to create great activities for students in which they get the chance to practice pronunciation without feeling self-conscious around their classmates. Twitter has been a great help, and I have even been able to get late homework turned in via facebook. We are starting a collaboration project with Brazil and that should be exciting. Students will be sending and receiving e-mails from peers in a private school in the south of Brazil.
Check back for  more information and hopefully some lively discussions with the students.

Welcome!

Welcome to the Spanish class blog for the Newell-Fonda school!  Stay tuned for more stuff!
